I first learnt this when I was 10. I was spending my summer holidays with my grandparents in Karachi.

An Afghan refugee saved me from boredom.

We played every single day in the exotic Karachi heat. I had no idea she was a refugee.

But looking back it was obvious. Her family were living and sleeping in a single room just enough to swing a cat in.

They were poor but still fed me.

And I still can’t remember her name. I’m ashamed of that.

All I have left is a few dusty memories and this one single photo.

 
 

She’s in the middle.

I wish I knew her name.

She taught me a huge lesson in life.

Never to judge people because of their backgrounds.
